Picture: BALJEET SINGH/FT FILE The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) three mills crushed 283,000 tonnes of cane as of August 1 and produced 24,000 tonnes of sugar. The tonnes cane to tonnes sugar (TCTS) ratio for the season is 11:91, meaning the FSC crushed 11.91 tonnes of cane to make one tonne of sugar for this period. The National Farmers Union (NFU) expressed serious concern that all three sugar mills are performing well below capacity, keeping lorry drivers waiting for several hours to offload cane. “All three mills are under-performing but there is no word from the FSC on what is wrong,” said NFU general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry.

Mustapha Ussif commissions 2 health facilities in 2 communities

+ The Member of Parliament for Yagaba-Kubori Constituency, Mustapha Ussif has commissioned two health facilities in the Mamprugu Moagduri district in the North East Region. One of the facilities, located at Kubori is a 15-bed capacity maternity ward with a theatre, delivery ward, and a public health unit. Although the project was initiated by the community members, it was completed and furnished by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia when it caught his attention during a tour of the region. The second project, located at Yizeisi is also a 6-bed facility with a delivery room and other auxiliary facilities. It was completed with funding from the District Assembly Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT).
